Frog Songs
Having listened to a number of frog song recordings, I can assure you that most of them sound like either chickens clucking or someone sawing wood. Frogs actually make their sounds by calling through special vocal sacs which they inflate in their throats. The vocal sacs don't make the sound; they amplify it, like loudspeakers. Here are a few of my frog song transcriptions for you:
| Green Tree Frog | | quick-quick-quick, ow-oo-ah |
| |
| Red-Eyed Tree Frog | | ack-ack, ra-hee, ra-hee, ra-heehee (a cross between a chicken and a monkey!) |
| |
| White's Tree Frog | | ronk-aree, ronk-aree, ronk-aree |
| |
| Wood Frog | | ara-rug, ara-rug, ara-ree (like geese or someone choking) |
| |
| Southern Bullfrog | | g'runk, g'runk, g'runk (very deep) |
| |
| Bullfrog | | m-r-ooo, m-r-ooo (deep, a lot like a cow mooing!) |
| |
| Spring Peeper | | reep-reep-reep-reep-reep-reep |
| |
| Northern Leopard Frog | | t-t-t-t-t, rruh-rrah (like a woodpecker, then a chicken) |
| |
| Green Frog | | Boo. Boo. Boo. (a really slow attempt at a Halloween scare) |
| |
| Carpenter Frog | | uh-guh, uh-guh, uh-guh |
| |
| Puerto Rican Coqui | | co-kee, co-kee, co-kee (of course!) |
| |
| African Dwarf Frog | | rreeeee, rreeeee, rreeeee (like crickets) |
